Globe Telecom looks to space for coverage expansion

Globe Telecom has penned a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with AST SpaceMobile to boost its coverage and connect underserved areas in the Philippines.

AST SpaceMobile has developed a cellular broadband network designed to be accessible by standard mobile phones. When it launches, it will aim to provide Globe’s 86 million subscribers with expanded coverage in remote locations.

In a statement, AST SpaceMobile chief commercial officer Chris Ivory said: “The Philippines’ thousands of islands create formidable challenges to meet the growing demand for cellular broadband connectivity. We believe our planned space-based network solution is well-suited to help, and we’re excited to work with Globe.”

AST SpaceMobile has entered into agreements and understandings with operators globally which collectively serve over 1.8 million cellular customers.

It recently signed an MoU with Orange to plug coverage gaps in the operator group’s African footprint.
