Bank Rakyat taps CelcomDigi to create 5G portable banking fleet

Malaysia’s Bank Rakyat has tied up with CelcomDigi to boost its digital banking services, starting with providing 5G connectivity to its fleet of portable banking vehicles.

Under the partnership, CelcomDigi will support Bank Rakyat with end-to-end smart banking solutions for all types of connectivity as the bank undergoes digital transformation to boost operational efficiencies, improve customer service and future-proof its banking operations.

In the initial phase, CelcomDigi will install 5G connectivity in Bank Rakyat's ‘Bank Bergerak’ fleet of vehicles that serve as portable bank branches, particularly in underserved and rural areas. Bank Rakyat says outfitting the vehicles with 5G will enable smoother transactions and real-time updates during banking activities no matter where the ‘Bank Bergerak’ is located.

Bank Rakyat adds that CelcomDigi will also provide solutions to “ensure seamless 5G connectivity in some of Bank Rakyat branches across Malaysia, as well as enhancing the security and surveillance for off-premises, further safeguarding customers’ transactions.”

Beyond that, Bank Rakyat said it also plans to explore digital IoT opportunities, especially in cloud and cybersecurity solutions. Bank CEO Dato’ Dr. Mohammad Hanis Osman said this would pave the way for more digitalization solutions and applications that will help the bank stay competitive in the digital economy.

“We are creating this synergy to further enhance customers' banking experience with stable technology applications and a secure business environment, especially in extending financial services to the unbanked, unreached, and underserved communities,” he said. “This initiative also aims to address financial inclusion and catalyse the advancement and flourishing of small and medium-sized enterprises.”
