Indonesian telco XL Axiata and Nokia say that they have successfully completed a five-year project to modernise around 4,400 of XL Axiata’s existing sites in Central Java, to include 5G deployments in four cities.

The modernisation project involved swapping out the old network and adding new sites to improve capacity and overall network performance.

XL Axiata said it used Nokia’s AirScale, Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS), and Network Performance Improvement (NPI) programme to carry out the project in Central Java, as well as Nokia’s Network Maintenance and Support services to ensure quality of service.

“The modernized network is enabling us to delight our customers by providing best-in-class coverage and network performance,” said I Gede Darmayusa, director and CTO of XL Axiata, in a statement.

The project included activating 5G in Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, and Pekalongam in 2023. XL Axiata said the 5G infrastructure will be used by 5G applications developers as a test bed and later to deploy whatever 5G applications they come up with.

XL Axiata also said that it has signed an MoU with Nokia to co-develop 5G Cloud RAN to prepare XL for future 5G deployments.
