Colombia sets December date for 5G spectrum auction

Colombia’s long-anticipated spectrum auction process is slated to begin on 20th December 2023.

The schedule was confirmed by the country’s Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications (Ministerio de Tecnologias de la Informacion y las Comunicaciones, MinTIC).

In August, the ministry will publish its planned mechanism for the auction process, along with technical conditions and entry requirements. The following month, it will confirm the reserve prices for spectrum along with obligations and guarantees.

MinTIC will publish the final version of the resolution in October, and estimates that it will begin accepting applications from bidders on 10th November, with the auction set to begin officially on 20th December.

CommsUpdate reports that while MinTIC’s announcement did not specify the spectrum bands that will be sold at auction, the ministry has previously indicated that it plans to make airwaves in the 700MHz, 1900MHz, 2.5GHz, 3.5GHz and 26GHz bands available for bidding.
