Digital Realty launches its first Indian data centre in Chennai

Digital Realty announced the launch of its first data centre in India on Friday, which is also the first to be launched under its recently announced three-way joint venture Digital Connexion to develop data centres in the country.

The JV – whose full name is Digital Connexion: A Brookfield, Jio and Digital Realty Company – was formed by Digital Realty, Brookfield Asset Management and Reliance Industries in July 2023.

The new MAA10 data centre, located in Ambattur in Chennai, is the first phase of the 100MW-capable campus and will offer 20MW of IT load. It will be part of Digital Realty's global data center platform, PlatformDIGITAL, which hosts a connected data community of customers, partners, cloud and network service providers.

Digital Realty said MAA10 will also support its ServiceFabric feature later this year, enabling customers to rapidly configure and provision connectivity on-demand across their digital infrastructure to fit their needs.

Digital Realty also said the facility is designed to handle intense workloads such as artificial intelligence, with standardized and bespoke configurations to meet the high-density power requirements (up to 70 kilowatts per rack), and suitable cooling demands of such workloads.

MAA10 also offers deep interconnectivity via Reliance Jio’s digital and connectivity ecosystem and enterprise relationships, the company said.

Serene Nah, MD and Head of Asia Pacific at Digital Realty, said that India represents a key market opportunity for the company, as India is predicted to become the world's third-largest economy by 2027, and the surge of data generated from that growth will drive serious demand for quality data center infrastructure across the country.

“We believe MAA10's next-generation data centre infrastructure and Digital Realty's connected global open data centre platform provide the foundational pillars our customers need to innovate and tap into this thriving market," she said in a statement.

Digital Connexion CEO CB Velayuthan added that the location of MAA10 in Ambattur is ideal, “given the availability of the necessary power supply, high number of submarine cable landing stations in the local area.”
