Bharti Airtel announces solar power support for data centres

Bharti Airtel has announced the expansion of what it calls its green energy footprint with the commissioning of a captive solar power plant for its data centres in Uttar Pradesh.

The company, one of India’s leading digital communications solutions providers, has said that the 14 MWp captive solar power plant will help to meet the energy requirements of its core and edge data centres in India’s most populous state.

The facility, in the city of Tilhar, is the first of two solar plants being set up by Airtel in partnership with renewable energy company AMP Energy. A second plant, in the town of Begampur, is expected to go live in the next quarter.

Airtel has acquired a 26 percent equity stake in AMPSolar Evolution as part of its commitment to green energy-based solutions. AMPSolar Evolution is a special purpose vehicle whose purpose is the setting up of captive solar power projects in Uttar Pradesh.

Nxtra by Airtel, run by Airtel subsidiary Nxtra Data Limited, offers secure data centre services to leading Indian and global enterprises, hyperscalers, start-ups, SMEs and governments. It currently operates 10 large and 120 edge data centres across India.

During the 2022 financial year, Nxtra aims to meet over 50 percent of its power input through renewable energy sources and contribute to Airtel’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

This is far from the only recent big announcement related to green data centre infrastructure in India. As we reported in February, Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX have announced a 50:50 joint venture to build out what they call India’s leading green data centre platform.

In late March meanwhile, data centre provider ST Telemedia Global Data Centres’ India unit announced a new partnership with Indian cleantech company Avaada Energy to procure renewable energy.
