HGC and AMS-IX announce launch of new internet exchange in Manila

A new internet exchange has been launched in Manila in the Philippines by two major players in ICT service provision and interconnection platforms.

HGC Global Communications Limited (HGC), an ICT service provider and network operator with extensive global coverage, and AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange), a neutral member-based association that operates multiple interconnection platforms around the world, announced the launch during the tenth anniversary festivities of AMS-IX Hong Kong.

The strategic partnership between HGC and AMS-IX aims to enhance the quality of internet all over the world, say the two companies. AMS-IX is one of the world's largest peering hubs. Its peering expertise complements HGC's extensive global network and digital infrastructure, which, the two companies say, results in a partnership that is able to bridge the West and the East.

Over the years, HGC and AMS-IX have successfully launched and fostered four IXs in Hong Kong, Singapore, Chicago and the Bay Area. AMS-IX Bangkok will go live in Thailand later this year.

This latest expansion marks the sixth IX that HGC and AMS-IX will operate together. The Philippines has one of the world's highest levels of data usage, with over 80 million internet users, and is seen as one of the strategic hubs for internet and cables with the highest potential.

HGC and AMS-IX say they are ready to capitalise on mass demand for low latency, resilient and cost-efficient internet delivery through peering at a premium and neutral internet exchange. Through establishing an eminent IX with locally owned fibre infrastructure, they add, this collaboration paves the way for data centres, OTT, content providers, gaming companies, cloud service providers, MNOs and hyperscalers to access the Philippines.
