Omantel turns to Hughes for satellite backhaul

Omantel, the leading integrated telecom services provider in Oman, has selected the JUPITER System from Hughes Network Systems, a major name in satellite and multi-transport technologies and networks, to extend its mobile networks.

Omantel will deploy satellite backhaul of cellular network traffic using JUPITER System equipment, including a gateway hub and hundreds of remote terminals.

The operator points out that its aim is to connect more subscribers in more places throughout the sultanate, and satellite backhaul helps it to expand its network into areas where terrestrial backhaul is onerous or cost-prohibitive.

The JUPITER System is the next-generation very small aperture terminal (VSAT) platform from Hughes for broadband services over both high-throughput and conventional satellites.

In use at more than 12,000 cellular sites across Africa, Asia and Latin America, the JUPITER System offers, says Hughes, a low-cost and effective means of interconnecting cellular base stations, regardless of distance, infrastructure or terrain.

It's been quite a busy few months for the JUPITER system. Among recent inroads into major markets, Indonesian operator DTP plans to use the platform in deploying satellite connectivity across 1,400 rural locations.

In addition Egypt’s state-owned National Company for Telecommunications Services (NCTS) has selected the Hughes JUPITER System Series 3 to meet the ground segment requirements for the operation of the Ka-band TIBA-1 satellite.
