Parallel Wireless supporting TIP open RAN lab in Indonesia

The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) has chosen Parallel Wireless to supply open RAN software for TIP’s newly launched Community Lab in Indonesia.

TIP’s Community Lab aims to accelerate Indonesia’s digital economy and boost growth, in line with the Indonesian government’s goal to become one of the most digitally advanced countries in Southeast Asia.

First announced in July 2020, the lab is hosted by Telkom University with the support of and Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications. A multi-year collaboration, the lab is aimed at making Open RAN solutions deployment-ready and then rolling them out in live networks to deliver coverage at a much lower cost. Amdocs is providing its systems integration expertise to the lab.

The lab will help Indonesian mobile operators test and use OpenRAN-based technology as leverage to their business to have greater buying power. The Community Lab will use Parallel Wireless’s cloud-native open-RAN software in wider testing and validation programmes to facilitate deployment by the country’s operators, including Indosat Ooredoo, Smartfren, Telkomsel and XL Axiata.

Keith Johnson, Parallel Wireless COO, said: “the telecom industry is demanding networks that are open and flexible in order to reduce deployment and maintenance cost”, noting that Parallel’s partnership with TIP would facilitate “an open ecosystem of disaggregated RAN solutions based on open interfaces and O-RAN standards”.
