Vodafone Idea works with Indian Hackathon winners on 5G trials

Indian operator Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) has announced plans to test 5G-based solutions involving aerial traffic management and motion capture systems as part of its ongoing 5G trials on government-allocated 5G spectrum.

Vi has partnered with two promising start-ups – Vizzbee Robotics Solutions and Tweek Labs – both of which are winners of a 5G Hackathon organised by India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2020 along with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), to identify relevant India-focused ideas that can be converted into 5G solutions.

Vizzbee Robotics Solutions is working on new-age technologies to enable safe and reliable operations for drones and other low-altitude aerial vehicles. Tweek Labs designs and manufactures wearable electronic products for use cases in the field of sport and fitness.

With Vizzbee Robotics Solutions, Vi will be using the 5G network to validate solutions such as streaming live video frames from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over the network, demonstrating public safety and law enforcement applications for ground personnel, and performing real-time analytics from the data captured via drones. 

Vi’s association with Tweek Labs will involve testing a full-body motion capture suit using 5G technology; this could be useful for sports training as it helps monitor the performance of athletes.

Vi's spectrum allocation from the DoT for 5G network trials and use cases includes 26GHz and 3.5GHz spectrum.
