5G takes centre stage in Myanmar and Brazil

Among many 5G demonstrations planned or recently held, two that certainly put 5G centre stage – almost literally – are in Myanmar and Brazil.

Ooredoo Myanmar, a subsidiary of the Qatari Ooredoo Group, teamed up with Chinese telecommunications equipment supplier ZTE earlier this week to host an event at Myanmar Plaza Yangon. The event showcased multiple real-life uses of 5G for the first time in Myanmar, says the operator.

The live speed test at the event reached up to 1.75Gbps on Ooredoo Myanmar’s 5G network, while the demonstration also showcased a range of 5G use cases, including an immersive virtual reality experience and an innovative drone-based monitoring system put through its paces around Inya Lake. The intelligent autonomous drone, fitted with HD cameras and streaming capabilities allowing it to support automatic delivery and remote inspection, was one of the event’s highlights.

And speaking of highlights, Brazilian operator Oi plans to stage its latest 5G trial at the Rock In Rio music event, taking place as we go to press. The event-wide test is being conducted in association with Oi’s vendor partner, Huawei, and is said to be one of Brazil’s largest 5G trials to date. Attendees will be encouraged to utilise 5G handsets, while the network will also support live coverage of a number of groups appearing at the event.
